Raoul Steffani: The album you have here is the culmination of a long-cherished desire – a programme devoted to both Robert and Clara Schumann and the musical dialogue that blossomed between them during the early years of their married life, through their poems and song compositions. I am absolutely delighted and grateful for the opportunity to record this programme along with a selection of Robert Schumann’s most beautiful duets, in a truly luxurious pairing with mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená and my regular piano accompanist Gerold Huber.

“Steffani singt frisch und textdeutlich, interpretiert sensibel, aus einer klugen Mauerschau-Distanz heraus.”
Opernwelt
“…this is all first-rate, refined singing with lucid diction, elegant technique, and a palpable affinity for what he is singing.” “This is an exceptionally fine debut recording for an already well-developed singer.”
American Record Guide
“Steffani is a remarkable singer with an excellent diction and a natural sound, able to communicate an emotion astonishingly convincible.”
De Volkskrant
Baritone Raoul Steffani’s CD debut is a collection of early songs by major Lieder composers Schumann, Grieg, Sibelius and Berg, with accompaniment by Gerold Huber.
Many songs on this album have one thing in common: they are mainly early compositions, in some cases even the first songs these composers wrote. They all have a certain spontaneity and freshness which shows that the young men who composed them were still at the beginning of their careers, full of dreams and hopes for the future. Thus, not surprisingly, many of the songs are also about dreams, totally in the spirit of the true romantic soul.
